A New Release of By Mark Richard Zubro |
This one is for you Ron. Tom Mason, a former high school teacher, and his long-term lover, former baseball player Scott Carpenter, recently experienced the most difficult and stressful event that any couple can endure -- a wedding ceremony. Now the couple decides to leave town for a little rst, relaxation, and some much-needed time alone. The privately held Aegean island of Korkasi seems perfectly suited to their needs for privacy and comfort. All that surrounds them are twenty-two villas with like-minded couples, palm trees, and the ocean breeze. But that tranquil seeting soon changes when a dangerous storm hits, cutting them off from all contact with the outside world. They're trapped on the island, and things take a startling turn for the worse when the current owner of the island is found murdered , his body lying on the floor of Tom and Scott's villa. Now, as the storm gains speed and ravishes the island, guests and employees are being picked off one by one by a person or persons unknown. Clutching to only each other, and with no hope of outside help, Tom and Scott must uncover the murderer and stop him before everybody -- including them -- is dead. |

What Robert is Reading: By Michael Parker
|
Some of our group members will remember reading Michael Parker's novel, Virginia Lovers last fall. His new book, If You Want Me to Stay, is the story of a young rural Carolina youth and his brief road trip to self. This character has been compared to Huck Finn and Holden Caulfield. An incredible and intense read, Parker reveals the stressful family life of Joel Dunn, Jr. as he and his brothers lock themselves in their father's truck as their father is now in one of his 'off' moments. Their mother and older sister have already abandoned the family home because they could no longer take it. Joel is left to care and tend his two younger brothers and cope with his father's mental illness. After warning younger brother Carter not to get out of the truck, the two brothers watch Carter get his much beloved long blond curly hair and an earlobe sliced off by their father. In a panic, Joel starts up the truck and drives away -- to find help and to find the lost members of his family. Michael Parker's use of southern rural vernacular is well used in this short but incredibly rich novel. Parker takes the reader into Joel's mind to see his dream life as his two day flight presents a cold reality. A remarkable reading experience. |

What Robert is Reading: The Commitment: By Dan Savage
|
![]() |
Dan Savage's biting, ribald humor is delightfully evident is his latest book, The Commitment: love, sex, marriage, and my family. I found myself laughing out loud the morning I was finishing the last hundred pages as Savage went into the details of the setting and preparation of his not-a-commitment-ceremony-or-gay-marriage anniversary celebration of his relationship with his long-term companion. We also get further experiences with Dan's son; of particular delight is how their son learns the f-word and its appropriate usage. Great great fun and a great look at the changing face and landscape of today's American family. Autographed copies of The Commitment are available at Olsson's Books
& Records at the Lansburgh in the Penn Quarter, 418 7th St., NW |
